President’s Welcome: June 2016

In the OPC Foundation Board of Directors meeting in March 2016 (hosted by Yokogawa in Japan) we welcomed our newest board member, Matt Vasey from Microsoft. We also announced that Shinji Oda, Yokogawa has joined the OPC Foundation Board of Directors replacing Nobuaki Konishi, Yokogawa.

The month of April was very exciting with my personal attendance at the CSIA event in Puerto Rico, and the very important OPC Foundation participation and engagement in the Hanover Fair (which featured Barack Obama and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel doing the opening ceremony for the Fair and also touring the show, including the hall where the OPC Foundation was exhibiting).

Make sure you read the exciting summary of the Hanover Fair in this issue, which includes the electrifying details about the OPC Foundation embedded wall in the OPC Foundation booth, the OPC wall inside the Microsoft booth that demonstrates how OPC UA is being used as the interface to the Microsoft Azure cloud and the connectivity to many OPC UA embedded devices, as well as the exciting SAP robotics demonstration featuring OPC UA as the core architecture.0428161414 copy

Many exhilarating activities happened at the OPC Foundation press conference at the Hanover Fair, featuring many new collaborations being added to the OPC Foundation portfolio.

OPC also participated in The Automation Conference (hosted by Automation World magazine) and had two sessions on the agenda featuring OPC UA, which included speakers Russ Agrusa (ICONICS), Christine Frank (DELL), Armin Pühringer (HILSCHER), Bryan Griffin (NESTLE/ OMAC Board), and Dennis Brandl (BR&L Consulting).

By the time you read this newsletter, the OPC Foundation will have participated in a number of new webinars with consortiums and vendors evangelizing OPC UA. OPC UA will be featured at the Honeywell user group in San Antonio the week of June 20th. The OPC Day Europe is happening on June 22 and June 23 in conjunction with Automatica in Munich Germany. The OPC Foundation will be participating in National Instruments week in Austin in August

Please make sure you regularly check the OPC Foundation events page for the many OPC marketing and training events throughout the year.

On a technical front, significant progress is being made on the OPC UA publish / subscribe architecture, with planned release before the end of 2016, exciting work on the OPC UA security extensions, and beginning development for OPC UA support for TSN.
