Organized by the Open Atom Open-source Foundation, co-sponsored by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd, and co-organized by the OPC Foundation and Hollis Technology Group Co., Ltd, the final roadshow and award presentation of the 2nd Open Atom Competition “OPC UA Web API Technology Standard Application and Development Competition” was successfully concluded in Guangzhou, China.
Smart manufacturing requires data interoperability and bringing information from different sources together. OPC UA is a widely adopted de facto standard in the industry providing a standardized interface within and between existing devices and applications. The advancement of industrial IoT platforms and applications utilizing the OPC UA Web API will significantly enhance the interoperability of industrial field data, ensuring its efficient and secure flow.
Based on the existing OPC UA communication framework, each participating team had expanded their application with the new OPC UA Web API. After nearly three months of screening their work, seven of the 34 participating teams were selected as finalists.
Stefan Hoppe, President and Executive Director of OPC Foundation, said in his speech, “OPC UA is the pillar of Industrial Internet, which facilitates smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 applications. After 22 years of development, OPC UA not only serves as a connector throughout the industrial data space, including extensions to field-level use cases that standardize horizontal communication between PLCs, but it also addresses various use cases from the IT such as MES, ERP, Digital Twin, Metaverse, DataSpaces and more. It is important to highlight that this standardized information will help to significantly shorten the training time of AI.”
In his speech, Dr. Hu Jingyi, Member of OPC Foundation Board and Chief Strategy Officer of Huawei Industrial Digitalization, pointed out that Huawei comes from industry, serves industry, and has the vision of building a smart world where everything is connected. Therefore, Huawei actively contributes to the competition and co-hosts it with the Open Atom Open-source Foundation and the OPC Foundation. Huawei also expects to aggregate the power of millions of developers to serve industrial enterprises and create value for customers.
The winner of the “OPC UA Web API Technology Standard Application and Development Competition” was the Shenzhen Qianhai Harvest team. Mr. Xia Hao, Manager of Software Technology Department of Shenzhen Qianhai Harvest Technology Co., Ltd. said, “Our company started to work with OPC UA in 2015, and today we won the first prize, I think this is just a starting point, let’s work together to promote the wide use of OPC UA in OT systems and IT systems of various industries.
Huawei Cloud provided the Industrial IoT Platform, Geminidb Timing Database, Astro Low-Code Platform, and other development tools for the competition to help developers complete the end-to-end solution, construction, and validation environment more quickly. They also provided an open-source reference technology implementation for unified aggregation with integration of OPC UA data from multiple data sources through the OPC UA Web API. Key indicators can be published to the cloud for monitoring, management of smart meters, operation and maintenance of production systems, as well as product identification and other industrial scenarios.
