OPC UA Companion Specification for Weighing

    Sponsored by: METTLER TOLEDO

The weighing industry is proud to be an early adopter of the OPC UA standard by completing the definition of their Companion Specification as one of the first technology groups across all industries globally. The OPC UA Companion Specification for Weighing is actually designed by a joint work group consisting of 11 leading weighing technology manufacturers, which met regularly over the past two years. Over this period, the group maintained an open book policy in accordance with the requirements of the OPC Foundation and each manufacturer of weighing technology was free to join. This allowed interested organizations to participate or to just follow the development. After the specification successfully passed the public review at the beginning of 2020, it is now final and is soon to be published.

METTLER TOLEDO has the specification already available on the first day of its publication. The METTLER TOLEDO solutions include the device classes “Simple Scale” and “Checkweigher”.

The Simple Scale specification provides all commonly used data points and method calls for static weighing with bench, floor and tanks scales in industrial environments. It is possible to connect new – and also installed scales – via modern OPC UA communication to Enterprise Resource Planning and Manufacturing Execution Systems as well as to cloud services.

The Checkweigher Specification includes data points and methods calls for dynamic weighing with individual item weights, classification, statistics, conveyor control and machine state information for OEE calculations. It is available in multi-technology combination systems where checkweighers are combined with METTLER TOLEDO metal detector, x-ray inspection as well as with vision inspection.
