OPC Foundation Releases Open-Source Cloud Initiative Reference Solution

The OPC Foundation® Cloud Initiative has reached an important milestone with the release of its open-source Cloud Initiative Reference Solution on GitHub, transforming the concepts described in the Cloud Reference Architecture into a deployable, end-to-end implementation. The solution provides the industrial community with a practical blueprint for building interoperable edge-to-cloud systems based entirely on open standards and open-source software.

The Cloud Initiative was established to accelerate interoperability between operational technology (OT), IT systems, and cloud applications through OPC UA®. Its broader vision includes enabling use cases such as industrial AI, digital twins, industrial data spaces, and Digital Product Passports (DPPs), while avoiding vendor lock-in and preserving the semantic richness of industrial, OPC UA information models.

Until now, the Cloud Initiative’s architecture existed primarily as a reference model. The new reference solution brings that architecture to life by integrating key OPC Foundation open-source projects into a complete, working platform. Components include UA Edge Translator for industrial connectivity, UA Cloud Publisher for data transport, UA Cloud Library for information model management, cloud-to-edge command and control capabilities, telemetry storage, dashboards, and Digital Product Passport (DPP) services. Together, these components demonstrate a full interoperability stack from shop floor assets to cloud applications.

A key design principle of the solution is “zero lock-in.” Manufacturers can deploy the platform on standard Linux systems, industrial PCs, or low-cost industrial edge gateways while maintaining compatibility with multiple cloud providers and enterprise applications. The architecture combines open communication standards such as OPC UA Client/Server, OPC UA PubSub, MQTT, REST, and DPP technologies, enabling organizations to replace or extend individual components without breaking interoperability.

Another significant capability is automated onboarding of industrial assets. Devices that do not natively support OPC UA can be integrated through standardized protocol translation and semantic mapping, allowing their data to become immediately usable by analytics platforms, AI systems, and business applications. This reduces integration effort while preserving context through OPC UA Information Models and standardized Companion Specifications.

The reference solution also serves as the foundation for one of the industry’s first end-to-end open-source implementations of the European Union Digital Product Passport. By combining shop-floor data acquisition, semantic modeling, cloud processing, and secure data sharing, the solution demonstrates how manufacturers can establish traceability and compliance workflows based on open standards rather than proprietary platforms.

For the OPC Foundation, the release represents the culmination of several Cloud Initiative goals: publication of a cloud reference architecture, development of open-source edge and cloud components, support for digital supply chain and DPP data exchange, and delivery of practical interoperability guidance to the industry.

By making the complete implementation available as open source under MIT license, the OPC Foundation is giving vendors, system integrators, researchers, and end users a common starting point for experimentation, validation, and innovation. More importantly, it demonstrates that interoperability is not merely a specification goal but an achievable reality through open standards, shared semantics, and collaborative software development.

The Cloud Initiative Reference Solution is available on GitHub here and can be deployed in less than a minute, providing an accessible pathway for organizations seeking to build interoperable industrial cloud solutions powered by OPC UA.
