TwinCAT OPC UA: Standardized Communication with Information Modeling

As a long-term active partner of the OPC Foundation, Beckhoff was among the earliest adopters to implement the OPC UA standard in many innovative ways. After enabling the standardized exchange of data via OPC UA for many years, it has become even better with additional new features that improve the modeling of systems, security, and usability.

    Data is the New Currency

A central challenge of Industrie 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of things (IIoT) is secure standardized data and the exchange of information between devices, machines, and services from various industries. The OPC UA standard is the only mandatory protocol required in the criteria checklist of “Product capabilities for Industrie 4.0 Products” provided by the German Industrie 4.0 Platform.

      Secure OPC UA Connectivity

Managing security certificates is one of the most important parts of establishing an OPC UA connection. Cogent’s DataHub makes it easy to accept or reject certificates using its built-in management tool. Plus with its latest release, they’ve added the ability to act as both an OPC UA Client and Server.

        President’s Welcome

2016 was a outstanding year with all the new collaborations and extensions to the OPC UA technology. 2017 will significantly exceed the success of 2016! OPC UA technology development is well underway for the publish/subscribe architecture which will further extend information integration and system wide interoperability from the embedded world to the enterprise. From an event perspective, the OPC Foundation is hosting many of its own events and participating in a multitude of tradeshows internationally.
We’ve expanded the newsletter program from four newsletters in 2016 to doing six newsletters in 2017 because of the volume of information and making sure that we are providing the latest and greatest timely information. Thanks again for taking time out of your busy day to read this edition of the OPC Foundation OPC connect newsletter.

Top 10 Considerations when Implementing OPC UA

Those who deploy the OPC Unified Architecture (UA) will be able to better leverage plant floor to enterprise communications as a vehicle to participate in IIoT applications. The goal for OPC is to be a standard for interoperability for moving information vertically through the enterprise of multi-vendor systems as well as providing interoperability between devices on different industrial networks from different vendors.

Why should I choose OPC UA?

When it comes to implementing IIoT and Industry 4.0 technology, OPC UA is considered to be the ideal communication protocol. In fact, it’s hard to imagine the future of these solutions without it. But what’s really behind all the hype? Click here for an overview.

OPC UA – A Complete Solution for IIoT Communications

We are Ocean Data Systems, makers of Dream Report – the “Industrial” solution for reports and dashboards. When selecting interfaces for secure connectivity to data sources across the internet, our first choice for Dream Report was OPC UA.

                President’s Column

Welcome to the final edition of the OPC Foundation OPC Connect newsletter of 2016. It has been a very exciting year. We have seen record growth in adoption of the OPC UA technology across multiple domains and vertical markets. The OPC Foundation policy of being truly open has expanded the reach of the OPC technology. The specifications are available to everyone, the technology is open sourced, and now we have opened up our certification labs to non-members.

OPC UA Available for 120 Million Devices

There’s no doubt – many in the manufacturing industries believe IoT and Industrie 4.0 are essentially stuck at the concept level and there is no standard available for tools and solutions today in the automation market. However, this is only perception; reality is a completely different story. How prepared are you to leverage ALL the data from 120 million connected devices from automation suppliers … already today!

OPC UA Security for Mobile Healthcare Services

OpSIT is a project supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research whose goal is to support the health sector with the optimized application of Smart Item Technologies, using the example of patient care. The choice to use the industrial-oriented protocol OPC UA came from its flexibility and near real-time capability to transport the encrypted delivery intake report to the care cloud gateway server (OPC UA Historian Server).
