New OPC UA Products
Three new products of note this month are OPC UA Pub/Sub capabilities from Beckhoff, OPC UA embedded on Siemens drives, and OPC UA support for edge computing from TTTech.

New OPC UA Products
This month’s new products include a new suite to send OPC UA information over MQTT, a Wrapper that converts OPC classic into OPC UA, native OPC UA implementation into a popular server, and a multi-protocol gateway with OPC UA capability.
New Products supporting OPC UA
Three new products with OPC UA capability are highlighted this month. The first is the Glance graphical visualization client from ECG that supports OPC. Second is the updated netIOT gateway from Hilscher that brings IT systems and OT systems closer together. Third is the eWON Flexy M2M router and gateway with OPC Foundation-certified OPC UA capability.
Tunnel Project [Case Study] and 11 Products
The Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, when open this June, at 57 km will be the longest railway tunnel in the world. OPC UA was defined as the standardized interface between the tunnel management system and the electromechanical systems. Given the need to integrate sixteen different facilities from different suppliers, it was vital to use a platform-neutral, standardized and uniform protocol. This case study from Siemens is accompanied by a list of 11 of their products with OPC UA on board.
Building Automation [Case Study] and Embracing IoT
CIAT, situated in the Rhone-Alpes region of France in Culoz, has been an expert producer of air conditioning, refrigeration and heating units for 80 years. They implemented ICONICS’ GENESIS64™ and OPC UA Server Suite, across their entire building following a three-month pilot program. Also, ICONICS recently introduced its new IoT Gateway Suite, and enhanced integration with the next generation of Microsoft Azure cloud platform and services.
How “Industrial Cloud Communications” Delivers the Benefits of Internet-Connected Manufacturing
The Internet of Things (IoT) is promising major operational benefits by closing the gap between production and IT. What’s needed is a way to move field-level data from existing manufacturing networks to the cloud-based applications. An OPC UA + MQTT gateway makes it possible to access a field device via the TCP/IP channel of an Industrial Ethernet network, but without PLC involvement.

Softing introduced a gateway for data connection of Siemens S7 PLCs to OPC UA clients and demonstrated the first OPC UA Publisher/Subscriber real-time stack.
Cogent Real-Time Systems announced that in full support of the OPC Foundation’s OPC UA initiatives, the next release of the Cogent DataHub will feature both OPC UA server and OPC UA client connectivity.
